Cardiff Castle is supposed to be one of Wales’ leading heritage attractions. It is located within beautiful parklands at the heart of the city. The Roman fort was established at the end of the 50s AD. Remains of the Roman wall can still be seen today. After the Norman conquest the castle’s keep was built, re-using the original site of the Roman fort. It passed through the hands of many noble families until in 1766, it passed to the Bute family. From 1866 onwards, architect William Burges was to transform the castle lodgings. Within gothic towers he created lavish and opulent interiors, rich with murals, stained glass, marble, and elaborate wood carvings. The Bute family continued to stay at the castle throughout the 1930s.
