Abbey Road Studios is probably the most famous recording studio in the world and a global music icon. Originally a nine-bedroom house built in 1829, it later became the world’s first purpose-built recording studio with a grand opening ceremony in November 1931. Since then, the studios have been famed for innovation in recording technology.
While initially a venue for classical recordings, the studios’ repertoire soon embraced Jazz and similar, as well as the first British Rock 'n' Roll records of the 50s. Abbey Road’s unparalleled history spans from Pink Floyd to countless iconic landmark recordings from Shirley Bassey, Aretha Franklin, and The Hollies to Radiohead, Oasis, Amy Winehouse, Muse and Florence + The Machine. Recent projects mastered or re-mastered by the engineers include music from The Beatles and The Rolling Stones.
Mainly, Abbey Road is of course synonymous with the legendary work of The Beatles, who recorded 190 of their 210 songs at these studios. Abbey Road itself is the name of their eleventh studio album, released in September 1969. The album cover features the four band members walking across a zebra crossing outside the studios. This photograph has become one of the most famous and imitated images in the history of popular music. Have a look at the original album cover here.
When around, walk the famous crossing the way the Fab Four once did. Wave to the webcamera and check your footage later. Also feel free to paint a message upon the graffiti wall outside the studio building. Attached to the studios is also a merchandise shop.
