Rock im Park is twin festival to Rock am Ring in the west of Germany. Originally founded in 1993 as Rock in Vienna in Austrian capital of Vienna, it moved to Munich the following year. First as Rock in Riem at the old Munich airport, in 1995 as Rock im Park in Munich olympic stadium and around. Since 1997 it takes place in Nuremberg with annually 70,000 rock and metal fans. Headliners since included Metallica, Die Toten Hosen, Muse, Green Day, and Rage against the Machine only to name a few.

It is sometimes open to public tours if you are interested in having a look around. Max Morlock Stadium opened in 1928, it is located next to the festival infield. During the 1972 Summer Olympics, it hosted six football matches. In 1967, it hosted the European Cup Winners' Cup final between Rangers and Bayern Munich. Bayern won 1- 0.

Please do not jump into Dutzendteich, the lake near the camping area - try this one rather.Take your towel and your bathing clothes and head to this open air swimming pool. Just behind the stadium, you will find Freibad Stadion Nürnberg offering various swimming pools for great refreshment. Also featuring a jump basin, slides, and a beach volleyball ground.
Rock im Park takes place on historical ground. Reichsparteitagsgelände is where six National Socialist party rallies were held between 1933 and 1938. These days were a self-portrayal of the NS-state. In a propagandistic way a relation was drawn between the NS-movement and the glory of medieval emperors. Important location was the huge field which today is the site of Rock im Park’s main stage: Zeppelinfeld. Dokumentationszentrum is a museum with a permanent exhibition concerned with the causes, connections, and consequences of Third Reich. Topics with direct reference to Nuremberg are especially taken into account.
If you don’t want to camp at the festival, try Advantage Hotel. Walking from the festival ground is perhaps too far, but there’s a direct tram line to the hotel and on Rock im Park weekend, the hotel is fully booked with festival folks who like a proper bed and a hot shower.
For those who don’t want to camp Hotel Petzengarten is one of the best hotel choices around. Unique benefit: it’s in walking distance to Rock im Park festival site. Also offering authentic German cuisine in its lovely restaurant.
Either inside or in the huge beer garden at the lakeside - Gutmann am Dutzendteich is in walking distance to Rock im Park. Serving traditional German food from yummy breakfasts to proper lunch and dinner.
When attending Rock im Park, you definitely need to take some time exploring Nuremberg, just a few steps away from festival ground. First documentary mention of the city is dated in 1050, with a great expansion in the following 500 years due to its location on key trade routes. Nuremberg is often referred to as having been the unofficial capital of the Holy Roman Empire. One of the main sights of the Franconian capital is beautiful Nuremberg Castle overlooking the city.
Download Festival is a Rock with about 80,000 visitors, held annually at Donington Park. It is the most popular British Rock and Heavy Metal festival and has hosted some of the genres' biggest names, including Black Sabbath, Slipknot, Metallica, Iron Maiden, Motörhead, Aerosmith, AC/DC, Kiss, Judas Priest, and Guns N' Roses. Normally, Donington Park is a motorsport circuit.
Within a beautiful facade, cultural meeting place Vooruit in Belgian city of Ghent is host to live gigs from Indie and Alternative to Rock, Punk, and Metal. There is a major Belgian underground Rock scene so the event calendar is fully packed.
Kinky Star is an alternative music hotspot and bar in Ghent, notorious for its Irish coffees. Also homeport to a record label of the same name.
Elpee isn’t as accessible as many other pubs and venues due to its heavy music. Definitely worth a visit for any Metal fan around Ghent.
The Edwardian building has been hosting live music for decades now. O2 Academy Oxford hosted some impressive live performances in the past such as Editors, Foals, Elbow, Stereophonics, Ozzy Osbourne, Babyshambles, and Royal Blood. A Radiohead show even went on to become the video for their debut single Creep. Other highlight performances include Supergrass, Coldplay, Kings of Leon, Robert Plant, The Killers, The Strokes, and Muse.
